DESO Ltd, specialise in the design and manufacture of fuel and oil storage systems. In order to maintain the momentum of business improvement, DESO Ltd, placed two of its manufacturing Team Leaders on the Operational Leadership Programme, delivered by the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service.
Background
DESO Ltd, specialise in the design and manufacture of fuel and oil storage systems. The business has a strong order book and have seen some excellent results through previous lean manufacturing programmes. In order to maintain the momentum of business improvement, DESO Ltd, placed two of its manufacturing Team Leaders on the Operational Leadership Programme, delivered by the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service.
Scope
To improve the productivity of the manufacturing process, through the application of lean manufacturing and management techniques.
Method
Two Team Leaders from Deso, attended a series of 6 workshops spread over a ten week period which covered the following:-
- Assessment - delegates were assessed against well defined core management and leadership traits, the results of which, helped determine their individual development plans.
- Project - delegates selected two projects. The first, to tackle stock variance of the manufacturing area, due to lack of material control systems. The second, attacked quality problems, suffered within the manufacturing process.
- Learning - 8 half day learning sessions were attended covering areas of leadership and management, making teams work and operational improvement.
- Evaluation - one to one evaluation at the delegates place of work.
- Coaching - both delegates received one to one coaching and feedback sessions to assess their development.
- Celebratory Event - the results, of the business improvements made, learning and coaching experience, were presented to the delegates peers and respective businesses.
Options and Recommendations
- Introduction of a new standard operating procedure and check sheet requiring team leaders sign off.
- Introduction of a mould check tagging system, to eliminate poor or un-prepared moulds, being used in the manufacturing process.
- Introduction of standard operating procedures for machine operators for checking and sign off, of machine set up, therefore eliminating quality losses as a result of incorrect machinery set up during changeover.
- Finished stock management system put in place to eliminate stock variance.
Results
- Stock variance reduction from £12,000 to £1059
- Quality losses reduced by 99%
- Improved machinery set up standards
