Phil Houlton – MAS Advisor

Phil’s role involves liaising with manufacturers in the region and performing Manufacturing Reviews on a face-to-face basis to identify areas for business improvement. Using his wide experience in the manufacturing sector, he analyses process and creates detailed reports that structure a plan for moving forward. The final part of his role is helping companies find consultants to support them and ensure that project are eligible for grant funding. Phil's priority county is Nottinghamshire.

Philip Houlton - MAS Advisor

Phil is a dynamic, flexible manufacturing engineering consultant. He has many years of practical experience of delivering solutions to manufacturing industry, with wide exposure at all levels to manufacturing issues. He is dedicated to promoting world-class manufacturing and business improvement. Passionate about continued personal development and knowledge transfer. Proven skills in managing change, high precision manufacturing, leadership of multi-discipline teams, project management, new product introduction and process planning.

He has a through practical understanding of engineering and manufacturing processes, particularly machining, metal forming and established and emerging non traditional manufacturing techniques and is able to add value to solutions through technology transfer.

In recent years Phil has worked within Supplier Development at Rolls Royce and was responsible for improving the delivery performance of business critical suppliers using a data driven (DMAIC) approach whilst also delivering suitable training, coaching and mentoring to staff at all levels within a supplier’s organisation to instil a change and business improvement culture. Some of Phil's successes include;

Process mapping to identify sources of waste within the manufacturing process in order to develop an ideal future state, this is then used as the basis of a new capital purchase program to reduce product costs and improve lead-time.

Undertaking data driven business diagnostic process to determine areas of greatest opportunity for delivery improvement utilising techniques including value stream mapping (VSM), lead-time analysis, demand stability, stakeholder mapping and root cause problem solving.

Leading a multi-disciplined team to develop an automated cell to balance turbocharger assemblies capable of producing 400K units P.A. with a value of £3.25M.

Introduction of a new manufacturing process delivering an annual cost saving £100K while simultaneously generating an additional 15,000 hours of manufacturing capacity per year.

Development of the plant layout for the relocation of a business to new larger premises. The plan was required to detail product flow, dedicated customer manufacturing and assembly area’s, facility to accommodate additional machinery as company grows and all support areas necessary to maintain production.

Phil holds a MEng Degree in Mechanical Engineering and has completed the Fellowship in Manufacturing Management program at Cranfield University and is currently pursuing Chartered Engineer status.
