Ian Davie – MAS Advisor
Ian’s role involves liaising with manufacturers in the region and performing Manufacturing Reviews on a face-to-face basis to identify areas for business improvement. Using his wide experience in the manufacturing sector, he analyses process and creates detailed reports that structure a plan for moving forward. The final part of his role is helping companies find consultants to support them and ensure that project are eligible for grant funding. Ian's priority county is Derbyshire.

Ian has many years of practical experience of delivering solutions in manufacturing operations and exposure to all levels of management within SME businesses.
He has 15 years experience of practical operations management, managing purchasing, production, transport, customer services and stores activities. With a strong emphasis on implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive the improvement process. Some of Ian's successes include;
Identification, justification and implementation of new CNC manufacturing technology for aluminium extrusions and panel products to improve flexibility, efficiency and quality.
Introduction of Kanban to control manufacturing line side stocks of materials and 5S techniques to improve tidiness.
Planning and implementation of factory layouts for the following aspects:
Project management of new manufacturing facility to cater for a new product, and support growth of worldwide sales to £1.5million over 4 years. Introduction of new products within an existing factory through improved space utilisation. Moving existing factory facilities to new premises.
Implementation of lean manufacturing rapid improvement events (Kaizen) to make step changes in cellular manufacturing processes through the elimination of waste within the process, and implementing one piece flow and pull production within the manufacturing cell design. Involvement of all levels of the company to have input from all team members. Rapid Improvement Events have also covered aspects of Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) and Production Preparation Process (3P).
Lean office techniques used to improve information and paperwork flow, accuracy of project planning and production capacity scheduling. Thus improving quality, reliability and accuracy of data, speed of throughput and reducing data entry frequency.
Driving through cost reductions by working with supply chains to identify alternatives to current materials and designs, and implementation of supplier agreement consignment stocks that benefit all parties through a longer term supplier relationship.
Ian holds a BEng Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Brunel University.
